Sitting Pretty with a Vanity Stool

The vanity stool is an oft-neglected part of the modern bathroom or bedroom vanity. Many bathroom vanities are designed for use without stools, and most bedroom vanity sets already include a vanity stool. But adding a unique or decorative vanity stool can be an inexpensive way to bring new life to your vanity or grooming area.

Vanity Stools 101
The first thing to know about vanity stools if you've never owned one is that they're typically a lot shorter than bar stools or patio stools. The vanity stool you buy will likely be somewhere between 18 and 24 inches high. If that's too short, you may want to substitute another type of stool.

Vanity stools also tend to be more decorative than other stools. That's great for bedroom vanities, but if there's a lot of water splashed around your bathroom vanity you might want to look into waterproof vanity stools.

Types of Vanity Stools
Contemporary vanity stools are frequently made from wood and padded leather or vinyl, oftentimes with a swivel seat. Aluminum and wicker are also used in modern vanity stool design, with cushions made of suede or fabric.

Traditional and retro vanity stool designs are arguably the most interesting, though some of them verge on the ostentatious. For example, a vanity stool with a fabric skirt looks like it should have "princess" written on the back with glitter. Tuffets are low decorative seats "usually featuring tassels" that are also used as vanity stools, but it seems impossible to sit on one without imagining yourself as Little Miss Muffet.

However, there are some exceedingly lovely vintage vanity stools available. Many of them feature arched designs or wrought iron bases and very classic looking patinas. Small benches or storage ottomans can easily double as vanity stools, with the added bonus of extra seating and storage space.
